The 1949 baseball season ended as only one other baseball season in history had. On the last day of the season, both the American and National League pennants were still up for grabs.. In the National League the Brooklyn Dodgers were ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals by one game. The Dodgers entered the last day of the season playing the Philadelphia Phillies in old Shibe Park. If they lost and the Cardinals won it would force a playoff for the National League pennant. In the American League the decision of the pennant winner was a little more direct. The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox came into the last day of the season both tied for first place, and as the baseball gods would have it, they were playing each other. The winner of this game would win the pennant. Not since 1908 had pennant races in both leagues come down to the last day
